Battling Depression: Owen Wilson

Owen Wilson is an American actor and writer. Wilson was previously linked with actress Demi Moore, singer Sheryl Crow and, most recently, with the actress Kate Hudson. His relationship with Hudson ended in May 2007. The police were called to Wilson's Santa Monica residence on August 26th, 2007. Wilson was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for treatment, and his attorney later confirmed that the actor had been taking antidepressants. He is said to have attempted suicide by slashing his wrists and taking an overdose of pills.

Because of his hospitalization, Wilson was forced to drop out of the cast of the comedy "Tropical Thunder". "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time," said the star of "Wedding Crashers." Later, however, he did appear in early October at the premier of "The Darjeeling Limited," a comedy about three brothers on a train voyage through India in which he stars.

Depression interferes with daily life and is not merely a temporary mood. Patients diagnosed with depression should be treated immediately and if the syndrome continuous, they should be put on suicide watch. Antidepressents, contrary to popular belief, do not cure serious depression. A recent study in the Journal of American Psychiatry found that antidepressants may be responsible for a rise in the risk of suicide among teenagers. And some researchers believe that antidepressants pose similar risks for some adults as well.
